Chatham tax hike likely

Property owners could see their tax bills rise an average of 15 percent if the Chatham County commissioners approve the budget County Manager Charlie Horne presented Monday.

The proposed increase would pay for new building projects, add six new sheriff's deputies, and buy new voting equipment, among other things.

Though the county's budget of $54.4 million would increase 14.5 percent to $62.4 million next year, the county property tax rate would go down because of revaluation. Property values in the county have increased an average of 21 percent in the four years since the last revaluation.

Under the current tax rate of 64.64 cents per $100 of assessed value, a homeowner with property valued at $150,000 paid $969.60 in county taxes this year.

Under the proposed 2005-06 budget, the new tax rate would fall to 61.7 cents per $100. If the $150,000 property appreciated by the countywide average of 21 percent, the owner would pay $1,119.86 in county taxes -- an increase of $150.26.
