Winter Storm Warning for Chatham County, NC

Issued at: 6:25 AM EST 2/12/04, expires at: 4:00 PM EST 2/12/04

Winter weather advisory this morning through early afternoon.

Rain is expected to mix with wet snow over the western piedmont by daybreak. The snow and rain mixture will spread rapidly east to the coastal plain and interstate 95 corridor through the morning hours. Snowfall accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are expected with isolated amounts up to 3 inches mainly on grassy and elevated surfaces through early this afternoon. In localized areas, the rate of snowfall may be heavy enoungh in the mid morning hours to cause some slushy accumulation on roads.
Heaviest wet snow and rain will taper off early this afternoon with scattered snow flurries or drizzle expected to continue through the afternoon.

With ongoing precipitation, temperatures are expected to hover between 32 and 35 degrees causing melting of the snow on the ground.

Winter storm warning late tonight through Thursday afternoon .

Snow is expected to begin over the northwest piedmont shortly before daybreak. Snow will spread rapidly from the triad, lexington and asheboro east to the triangle and rocky mount through the late night and morning hours. Snowfall accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected late tonight through early Thursday afternoon. Snow showers will be heavy at times between sunrise and noon allowing for some accumulation on roads.

The heavy snow will taper off early in the afternoon with light snow expected to continue through afternoon hours. Light snow may mix with drizzle before ending late in the afternoon.
Temperatures Thursday will hover around freezing and some melting of snow will occur during the day, however snow will accumulate quickly on road surfaces during the heavier snow showers, especially in the morning and early afternoon. Remember that most winter storm deaths result from automobile accidents.
