Pittsboro, NC - The United Way of Chatham County Board of Directors has approved $322,000 in allocations to support 42 local service programs administered by 22 human service agencies that provide service to the residents of Chatham County. This is the largest annual allocation in the history of the United Way of Chatham County.

“Hundreds of volunteers and businesses, along with thousands of generous individuals are responsible for the success of the 2006 United Way campaign,” commented David Poe, United Way of Chatham County Board Chair. "We are grateful to all of our contributors and volunteers for generously giving back to make this a better community and help those who are working hard in nonprofit agencies to help others."

Betty Wilson, the 2006 Allocations Committee Chair facilitated the United Way of Chatham County allocation process. “We had the help of a diverse group of thirty volunteers who dedicated their time, community experience and knowledge to the allocations process,” stated Wilson. “The allocations process is a community effort. The community donates their money to the United Way campaign with the expectation that their contributions will go to charitable agencies that make an impact locally. The mission of the United Way of Chatham County is to invest in and activate the resources necessary to make the greatest possible impact in the community.”

“The 2007 allocations supports programs that nurture children, promote health and wellness, assist families, facilitate self-sufficiency, support senior citizens and aid people faced with crisis,” commented Dina Reynolds, United Way of Chatham County Executive Director. “One of the core goals of United Way of Chatham County is to maintain an ongoing commitment to focus United Way resources on the county’s most critical under-funded human service needs. We believe we have a duty to send contributors’ dollars to places where they can do the most good and produce measurable results.

“Many of the funded programs address the top ten health priorities identified by the Chatham County 2006 Community Health Assessment,” Reynolds said. Released in January of 2007, the study was an effort led by the Chatham County Public Health Department to identify major health issues that affect our community and to determine the health priorities of Chatham County. The 2007 United Way funded programs include Crisis Intervention, Workforce Training, Affordable Housing Initiatives, Child Care Services, In-Home Aid for Seniors, Transportation, Nutrition Programs, Legal Assistance, Activities for Children and Emergency Assistance,” Reynolds said.

The 2007-2008 United Way of Chatham County funded agencies are American Red Cross, Boy Scouts, Chatham County 4-H, Chatham County Council on Aging, Chatham County Together, Chatham Social Health Council, Chatham Trades, Chatham Transit, Child Care Networks, Community Cares Pharmacy, CORA, Deep River Mediation, Empowerment, Family Violence & Rape Crisis, Family Wellness and Recovery, Girl Scouts, Hispanic Liaison, Legal Aid of North Carolina, Orange Chatham Alternative Sentencing, Partnership for Children, Salvation Army and Triangle Radio Reading Services.
