Pittsboro, NC - The Pittsboro-Siler City Convention & Visitors Bureau has won four destination marketing awards, including the Gold Award for its interactive visitor brochure; the Platinum Award for its electronic newsletter, Tourism ChitCHAT; and two Innovation in Tourism Awards from the Destination Marketing Association of North Carolina (DMANC).

One of the innovation awards recognized efforts to promote work force development in ecotourism. The second one focused on the Bureau's efforts to promote media relations and stakeholder relations through its innovative use of online networks, Twitter and Facebook. These are examples of new media technologies and social networking options available to market the county as a destination.

Tourism ChitCHAT is a monthly publication, first published in August 2002, which is sent to visitors and media requesting visitor information about Chatham County. Other destination marketing awards that the CVB has garnered include the Gold Award and the Platinum Award for the Tourism ChitCHAT, the CVB Rising Star, and Platinum Award for Public Relations.

The DMANC Destination Marketing Achievement Awards were created to honor and showcase the best in marketing efforts by convention and visitors bureaus throughout the state. Out-of-state tourism marketing professionals and educators serve as judges for the awards competition. No fees were paid to submit award entries for the competition.

Visitors to Chatham County spent $24.83 million in 2007, an increase of 6 percent from 2006. The Chatham County occupancy tax, paid by visitors and collected by local lodging facilities, is a 3 percent tax that legally must be used to promote travel and tourism. The Pittsboro-Siler City Convention & Visitors Bureau is fully funded by this tax.
