Pittsboro, NC - Briar Chapel by Newland Communities, the Triangle region’s largest green community located in Pittsboro, is hosting the first annual Briar Chapel 5K benefit run on Saturday, May 9. The race is organized by East Carolina Road Racing and follows a new USA Track & Field-certified 5K course through the community.

Proceeds raised from the race will help the Abundance Foundation, a Chatham County-based non-profit organization, and its work to increase public awareness of sustainable energy usage and local food consumption.

The race will start at 8 a.m. Participants can register online or download a registration form. Registration is $20 in advance or $25 on race-day and includes a commemorative T-shirt. On Saturday, May 9, on-site registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. in the traffic circle near the Briar Club community clubhouse.

“The Abundance Foundation is a vital part of the community Briar Chapel serves,” said Keith Hurand, senior vice president, division manager for Newland Communities Carolinas division. “We are humbled to partner with and support an organization that shares a common goal of promoting local sustainability.”

An awards ceremony will immediately follow the race. Planned awards include top three men and women overall, as well as the top three men and women by age group. Computerized timing and scoring for the race will be provided by East Carolina Road Racing.
