Chatham County, NC - Due to the tremendous response from local businesses, churches and community members, this year’s “Kids for Kids” school supply drive was a big success. The drive, which was coordinated by the United Way of Chatham County, began on July 23 and collected over 300 backpacks, notebooks, binders, paper, pencils, crayons and other supplies.
The materials will be distributed by the Chatham County Schools’ Basic Needs Program. “We are very appreciative of the community’s consideration of our students,” said Mary Lee Moore, Project Director of the Chatham County Schools Basic Needs for Children Program. “Because of their concern and participation, our children in need will go to school better equipped to succeed.” Those in need of school supplies can receive them from their child’s school social worker or by contacting Carmen Luviano, Basic Needs Coordinators at 663-5678.
For the fifth consecutive year, CommunityOne Bank, formerly First National Bank, led the business community effort. Acting as a donation drop-off point, the staff encouraged customers and fellow businessmen to help local children excel academically through the provision of essential supplies. In addition to collecting school materials, the bank also made a financial gift to purchase supplies throughout the year.
“We are happy to have the opportunity to assist the students of Chatham County,” said Chris Walker, City Executive for First National Bank and Trust in Siler City. “Going back to school should be a fun time. Having the school supplies that all the other kids have is really important to the children. Meeting this need enables the students to focus on learning and that’s what matters.”
Area businesses and churches that collected school supplies for the “Kits for Kids” campaign include: Chapel in the Pines Presbyterian Church, Chatham Community Church, Edward Jones in Pittsboro, Evergreen United Methodist Church, Love’s Creek Baptist Church, Lystra Baptist Church, Pittsboro Presbyterian Church, Realty World-Carolina Properties and Robyn’s Nest.
