Pittsboro, NC - A 5-year-old Greensboro boy drowned Saturday afternoon in Jordan Lake.
The child, identified as Christopher Mykil Harris, was playing on the edge of the water at the Seaforth Recreation area on the Pittsboro side of the lake when his parents last saw him late Saturday afternoon.
No one saw the boy go into the water.
Volunteers began water and ground searches after the boy's grandmother realized he was missing.
Park workers, aided by volunteers and emergency responders, stopped cars leaving the recreation area off U.S. 64 between Apex and Pittsboro. They searched the beach area and water with a human chain.
Divers from the Chatham County Volunteer Fire Department found the boy in 4 to 5 feet of water in a swimming area at about 5 p.m.
There are no lifeguards at the swimming areas at Jordan Lake.
It was the first drowning this summer at Jordan Lake.
