Two people rescued on Haw river[Aug. 30, 2004] Two people were rescued Monday after they were stranded on the Haw River in Pittsboro. Emergency officials said they received the call around 4:30 p.m. Monday. Crews were able to reach the two people who were stranded on an island on the Haw River.
Doppler radar indicated a tornado over Wilsonville[Aug. 13, 2004] 624 PM EDT FRI AUG 13 2004 - the National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated a tornado over Wilsonville moving northeast at 5 mph. Locations impacted include Green Level, Carpenter, and Morrisville.

Academy of American Poets selects 31 national poetry landmarks[Aug. 5, 2004] New York - The Academy of American Poets announced today that it has designated 31 sites as National Poetry Landmarks. "Road Trip! Poetry Landmarks across the U.S.A." will be showcased on the Academy's website, during August 2004, as part of the Academy's year-long National Poetry Almanac project. Sites chosen as landmarks include George Moses Horton's home in Chatham County, NC.

Pittsboro customers lose power[Jul. 22, 2004] Between 300 and 400 customers in the southern part of town lost power briefly Wednesday after a dump truck hit a power line. The raised body of the dump truck snagged a power line at about 11 a.m. as the truck drove out of the Potterstone Village development off U.S. 15-501.
Man drowns at Jordan Lake[Jul. 11, 2004] Jordan Lake was the site of another drowning Saturday. A Hispanic man was found dead off Seaforth Beach. It was the 11th drowning at Jordan Lake in the last four years.
Pittsboro Relay for Life Surpasses Goal Again[May 19, 2004] Forty teams of 1,000-plus registered walkers (plus that many or more who just showed up to enjoy the festivities) worked hard to surpass this year’s goal of $150,000 for important cancer research, patient support services, and other programs offered by your American Cancer Society. As of Monday, May 17th, the total raised was at $161,244.95 and teams are still turning in money from their fundraisers.

Man drowns in Jordan Lake Saturday[May 16, 2004] A Randolph County man drowned in Jordan Lake while fishing near Martha's Chapel and Farrington roads on Saturday, according to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.
Chatham County among the 100 fastest growing[Apr. 13, 2004] Chatham County is one of five North Carolina counties that are among the 100 fastest growing in the nation, according to the Census Bureau. Chatham County grabbed the 100th slot, growing by 5,909, or 12 percent.
Haw River spring cleaning[Mar. 31, 2004] When 175 volunteers join together to clean up trash from streambanks and islands the results are impressive! Thirteen sites along the Haw River, from Alamance County down to Jordan Lake were cleaned up on March 13, plus two tributaries - Robeson Creek in Pittsboro and Morgan Creek in Chapel Hill. By the end of the day 320 bags of trash, 54 tires and tons of other junk had been hauled out of the water.

Chatham County increases water rates[Mar. 29, 2004] Water rates are going up in Chatham County. For residential and multi-unit residential complexes, it will mean an increase from $5.35 to $6 per 1,000 gallons of water up to 5,000 gallons, $6.68 to $7.50 per 1,000 gallons of water for 5,000 to 8,000 gallons, and $8.02 to $9 per 1,000 gallons of water for over 8,000 gallons.
Police investigating series of thefts in Chapel Hill[Feb. 20, 2004] Chapel Hill Police are looking for a man they believe is responsible for a series of purse snatchings. The thefts occurred over the last 10 days, mostly in grocery store parking lots. Purse snatchings have also been reported in Carrboro and parts of Chatham County.
Winter Storm Warning for Chatham is in effect through Monday morning[Feb. 16, 2004] A winter storm warning continues for the northern half of central north carolina until 430 am. The winter storm warning is roughly along and north of a line from lexington, asheboro to raleigh to wilson. Between 1 and 3 inches of snow and sleet has already fallen across portions of the northern piedmont, and additional snowfall accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible.
