Preservation of key heritage sites marks 2004[Jan. 26, 2005] Several key natural areas in North Carolina received protection in 2004, thanks to the combined efforts of three state conservation trust funds, non-profit organizations and the new Ecosystem Enhancement Program. As a result, water quality and habitat for endangered and threatened species will be permanently protected, impact of growth around military bases will be reduced and more recreational opportunities will be available to the public.
Tax hike drives gas prices higher[Jan. 25, 2005] North Carolina gas prices have jumped 11 cents in the past few weeks. Much of the increase is due to a surge in oil prices, but part of the reason can be traced to the halls of the Legislative Building in Raleigh. As we rang in the new year, the state's gas tax went up 2 cents, bringing to total state tax to 26.6 cents per gallon
Horton plans basketball fundraiser[Jan. 24, 2005] The PTSA of Horton Middle School will sponsor basketball games between student teams and teams comprised of parents and staff members on February 18. Games between the Horton girls’ and boys’ teams and the adults will be held in the school gymnasium from 6:30-9:00 p.m.

Pittsboro's Relay for Life fundraising goes online[Jan. 20, 2005] Pittsboro is taking their fundraising for the annual Relay for Life Event to an exciting new level. They have recently teamed up with Kintera Software and the American Cancer Society to offer their teams and participants a tool to use for online donations. “It’s a known fact that over 109 million Americans are online now. That’s a staggering figure that Pittsboro’s Relay for Life just couldn’t afford to ignore!” said Melanie Foster, Pittsboro Relay for Life Online Chairperson.

Snow surprises central North Carolina[Jan. 16, 2005] Winter weather surprised some Chatham County residents Sunday morning as a system dropped snow and sleet across an area of central North Carolina. A low pressure system that developed off the Florida coast was responsible for the unexpected snow, which was mixed with sleet and rain. Areas that saw the snow were mainly east of Pittsboro, Chapel Hill, Durham and Oxford.
RDU airport offers tips for uneventful holiday travel[Dec. 19, 2004] Morrisville, NC - Approximately 15 percent more passengers are expected to pass through Raleigh-Durham International Airport during the year-end holiday travel period, which lasts from today through Jan. 3. Calendar year-to-date statistics reflect a nearly 9 percent increase in travel compared to 2003, airport officials said. The busiest days of the travel period are predicted to be Thursday and Friday, just before Christmas.
Adopt a lapwarmer[Dec. 6, 2004] Winter is coming, and natural gas prices are at record highs. It has been unscientifically proven that a sleeping cat in your lap will allow you to set your thermostat 5 degrees lower without any ill effects! The Chatham County Animal Shelter has many wonderful lapwarmers available for adoption. Cats can be seen at the shelter on Landfill Road M-F from 9 to 4 and Sat 10-2, and at the Apex Petsmart at 55/64 anytime the store is open.

Chatham County Sheriff’s office Thanksgiving meal drive[Nov. 19, 2004] Everyone deserves to have a hot turkey dinner on Thanksgiving Day. Several folks from the Council on Aging In-Home Services Committee and the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office felt just this way. In a collaborative venture, the two agencies have enlisted the help of several groups to provide meals for 50 Chatham County senior residents. The In-Home Services Committee provided the people, addresses and other logistical information for the event.
Fire destroys Chatham home[Nov. 9, 2004] Fire destroyed a home located between Goldston and Pittsboro early Monday morning. Firefighters received the call to the home at 250 Guthrie Road just after 4 a.m. Goldston and Pittsboro fire departments both responded to the call. But by the time they arrived, the fire had already destroyed the home.
Firefighters teach prevention[Oct. 11, 2004] Local firefighters spent last week reviewing fire safety with students at Pittsboro Elementary School during Fire Prevention Week.
Relay for Life poker run a huge success[Oct. 2, 2004] The first annual Pittsboro Relay for Life Poker Run was a huge success. One hundred fifty three bikers and thirty-seven passengers came to Pittsboro from thirty-seven different NC towns to participate in the event and help raise $5,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Cat tests positive for rabies[Sep. 22, 2004] A domestic cat involved in an attack on a human Friday, Sept. 17, has tested positive for rabies, according to a report from the Chatham County Health Department. The N.C. Division of Public Health State Laboratory called Chatham County animal control officials late Monday, Sept. 20, to inform them of the cat's positive test for rabies. This incident occurred within the town limits of Pittsboro.
Man dies in Chatham County crash[Sep. 5, 2004] Jerry DeWayne Arrington, 39, of 371 Riverforest Road, Pittsboro, was killed around 6:55 p.m. Saturday night after he lost control of the car he was driving and ran off the road. The accident happened on Jones Ferry Road, about 9 miles north of Pittsboro.
Air Force Airman 1st Class LeTray Womble graduates[Sep. 5, 2004] Air Force Airman 1st Class LeTray T. Womble has graduated from the ground radio communications equipment apprentice course at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Miss. Womble is the son of Levonda J. White of Highway 87 N., Pittsboro.
