Work continues on the 15-501 widening project.
It's one of those road projects that never seems to end.
The work to widen Highway 15-501 in Orange and Chatham counties is well into its fourth year -- more than twice as long as initially planned.
The construction zone stretches from the Highway 64 Bypass in Chatham County all the way to Highway 54 in Chapel Hill. The contractor doing the work has been fined hundreds of thousands of dollars for taking too long.
Officials with the N.C. Department of Transportation have some good news. They say the project may be finished by late August, opening four lanes of highway along the busy corridor. The contractor is even more optimistic, saying work may be finished by August 1.
