Chatham County, NC - A new year brings with it Income Tax time. To help make your preparation and filing as easy as possible and FREE, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is back in Chatham County.

Designed to assist low to middle income people of all ages, the VITA program will provide computerized preparation of your Federal and North Carolina income tax returns. This free service for non-complex returns includes electronic filing. If a refund is due, electronic filing significantly speeds the receipt. All volunteer preparers are trained and tested according to IRS and North Carolina standards.

The service will be offered beginning February 3rd and continuing through April 14th. This year, to provide more convenient times and places, volunteers will work at 3 locations in Chatham County.

In Pittsboro, the location is the Council on Aging Senior Center on Highway 87 North where preparers will be available every other Wednesday and Saturday from February 3rd until April 14th. Wednesday hours will be from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm, while Saturday hours are 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

In Siler City, preparers will be available at the Wren Memorial Library, 500 N. 2nd Avenue, every other Saturday starting on February 10th to April 7th. The hours for the Library sessions are from 10 am to 1:00 pm.

New this year will be Wednesday sessions at the Western Chatham Senior Center located at 112 Village Lake Drive, inside the new Siler Business Park. Preparers will be available from 3 pm until 6:00 pm starting Wednesday February 7th and every other Wednesday until April 4th.

Appointments are necessary so please call Evelyn White at 542-4512 to arrange your session. Please bring to your appointment your last year's tax returns, W-2 forms, all 1099 forms for interest, dividends, social security, and other retirement income; totaled medical receipts and charitable contributions, plus social security cards or ITIN's for yourself, spouse and all dependents.

Spanish speaking clients are welcome and may make an appointment by calling Vinculo Hispano at 742-1448. If possible, please bring an interpreter to your session. Complex or lengthy tax returns maybe referred to paid preparers.

VITA is offered through the Orange County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.
