Pittsboro, NC - North Carolina Democratic Party's top activists and elected officials will meet today to choose a new party chairman. The State Executive Committee of more than 600 people will gather in Pittsboro, the hometown of the embattled outgoing chairman Randy Voller. The event will take place at Northwood High School. Registration begins at 9 am.

Five people have been actively running for the two-year term. Voller's term was rocky and marked by difficulties with fundraising. Under Voller, cash-flow issues left the party with little in its coffers and more than $260,000 in debts — mostly for legal expenses — at the end of 2014, according to federal and state campaign reports. Millions of dollars bypassed the party organization to independent expenditure groups and U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan's unsuccessful re-election campaign. An income tax check-off program that gave Democrats $1.5 million in 2012 was repealed by the legislature.

While the state Republican party has just over $151,000 in the bank, documents filed with the State Board of Elections shows the Democrats have just $42,731 in the bank.

Some conservatives have seen that “This Voller guy is a godsend to the GOP…”

The five candidates include current First Vice Chairwoman Patsy Keever of Asheville, as well as Marshal Adame of Jacksonville; Connie Johnson of Salisbury; Janice Covington Allison of Charlotte; Tommy Davis of Aberdeen; and Ron Sanyal of Raleigh.

The event schedule:

  • Doors Open at 9 am
  • Registration begins at 9:30 am
  • All Caucus and Auxiliaries to meet from 10 am to 12 pm
  • State Executive Council Meeting begins at 12 pm
  • State Executive Committee begins at 1 pm

Several of the candidates for the North Carolina Democratic Party chairmanship have submitted their biographical information for party member consideration. View their information online here.
