Chapel Hill, NC - Following four years of starting at center on four, dominating 2A Northwood Chargers basketball teams, it would have been easy for current UNC sophomore Chris Forbes to have moved on from basketball following an unsuccessful attempt during his freshman year at UNC to make the UNC Men’s JV Basketball team. However, after failing in his first attempt in the fall 2011 at earning a highly-coveted UNC JV Men’s Basketball team roster spot along with nearly 100 other undergraduate hopefuls yearning to don the Carolina blue, Forbes became even more determined and set his sights on making the 2012-13 UNC JV Men’s Basketball team. This persistence paid off with a spot on the 2012-13 UNC JV Men’s Basketball team.
One could sense Forbes’s determination immediately after tryouts ended for the 2011-12 team when he was notified of final cuts. In the days, weeks, and months thereafter, Forbes was in the gym hooping it up five and six days a week with others who either just missed making the 2011-12 JV team like Chris, or were not able to try out for the 2011-12 team. Collectively, Forbes and his basketball friends were setting the stage for one more shot at playing in the Smith Center prior to the UNC Varsity Men’s Basketball home games during 2012-13.
Forbes and a group of talented basketball friends invaded Ramshead Rec Center from 4:30 to 7 most days in hopes of refining their skills and remaining in basketball shape for the 2012-13 tryouts. Along the way, Forbes and his closest basketball friends rolled through the UNC Intramural Fall Basketball Tournament in October and November 2011 en route to claiming the highly valued UNC Intramural Champion T-shirt. More importantly, this organized basketball competition allowed Forbes and his JV hopeful friends to compete and sharpen their basketball skills and not give up on their dream of playing JV Basketball at UNC.
The result…Forbes and at least one of his intramural teammates, the starting point guard for this year’s JV team, are now wearing Carolina blue before most home UNC Varsity Men’s Basketball games. For Forbes, the thrill and excitement of earning the roster spot again comes with a new experience, biding his time behind returning, second year JV players, waiting his turn for next season. With Forbes being the tallest returning JV player for the 2013-14 season, it is highly likely next season will resemble his days at Northwood High School, where he will likely be a fixture on the court and a leader for the 2013-14 UNC Men’s JV Basketball team.
The UNC Men’s JV Basketball Season closes its season Saturday, February 16 with a game at 9 a.m. at the Dean E. Smith Center prior to the UNC-UVA game.
