Pittsboro, NC - Chatham County recycling programs are wrapping up operating on a special holiday schedule as the New Year begins. The free Christmas tree recycling begins this week.

The Main Solid Waste & Recycling Facility at 720 County Landfill Road will be closed:

Monday, January 16

This facility is also closed on weekends.

Holiday Recycling Programs

Free tree-cycling
Real trees can be recycled at the Main Solid Waste & Recycling Facility at 720 County Landfill Road, at no charge, on the following dates:

January 3, 4, 5, 6
January 9, 10, 11, 12, 13
January 17, 18, 19, 20

After January 20, regular yard debris rates will apply ($20/ton, $2 minimum). Please remove all decorations, pots, stands.

RECYCLE OLD STRINGS OF LIGHTS
Thanks to a "bright idea" by a county resident, old non-working strings of lights can be recycled at the Main Solid Waste & Recycling Facility at 720 County Landfill Road during the Tree-cycling dates listed above. Our electronics recycler will take these lights as long as they are separated from the rest of our electronics. Drop them in the designated container set up at our main office when you recycle your tree.

RECYCLE PAPER GIFT WRAP, CARDS, BOXES
As long as you remove strings, bows, ribbons, excess tape, foil or glitter, you can recycle your unusable paper gift wrap, empty flattened wrap rolls, empty flattened gift boxes, and gift cards in any mixed paper bin at our collection centers (decal required) or behind the office at the main facility (no decal required).

If you have corrugated cardboard boxes (remember, corrugated has that middle wavy layer), please remove all inside packaging, then flatten and recycle these boxes in the separate container for cardboard.

RECYCLE HOLIDAY COOKING OIL
Don't forget to save up your used vegetable oil from all your wonderful holiday cooking, and pour it off into the Cooking Oil recycling tank at any of our collection centers (decal required) or behind the office at our main facility (no decal required). Used cooking oil is recycled locally into biodiesel.

LOOKING FOR A LAST MINUTE GIFT IDEA?
The Earth Machine Backyard Compost Bin is available for the low price of $45. Its companion kitchen collector is only $5. Both can be purchased from the office at the Main Solid Waste & Recycling Facility at 720 County Landfill Road, Monday through Friday, 7am to 4pm.
