Pittsboro, NC - The Chatham County Public Health Department is proud to present the 2010 Community Health Assessment. The report is the result of 15 months of work by a variety of community partners and residents. The health assessment looks at health issues facing Chatham County residents, quality of life factors, barriers to health care, and an analysis of the health status of Chatham County residents.

“The Community Health Assessment is the foundation for improving and promoting the health of Chatham County residents. It offers information on where we stand today and our capacity to improve the lives of our residents,” said Holly Coleman, Health Director.

The purpose of the health assessment is to identify factors that affect the health of a population and determine priority areas to address. The Board of Health and staff of the health department use the results to develop plans around the top health priorities.

Chatham County residents’ opinions were sought throughout the process out in surveys, interviews, and focus groups to help set the priorities.

The priorities from the 2010 Community Health Assessment are as follows:

1. Obesity
2. Physical Inactivity
3. Affordable Housing
4. Hunger
5. Lack of Safe Areas to Walk/Bike
6. Lack of Adequate/Affordable Health Insurance
7. Diabetes
8. Transportation
9. Jobs/Adequate Employment
10. Inadequate Systems (Water/Sewer)

The focus areas will be obesity, physical inactivity including safe areas to walk/bike, and diabetes until the completion of the next Community Health Assessment in 2014.

The 2010 Community Health Assessment also includes the Youth Health Behavior Report. This document details the results of the Youth Health Behavior Survey performed on 6th-12th graders in the Chatham County School system during the 2009-2010 school year. The report analyzes the topic areas of obesity, injury and violence, substance abuse, and sexual health and risk behaviors among students.

The Chatham County Health Disparities Report will be released in February as a supplement to the 2010 Community Health Assessment.

The Chatham County Public Health Department wants to hear how you think the Community Health Assessment priorities should be addressed. You can email Marissa Jelks at There will also be an opportunity to share your thoughts at a community forum in late February.
