Pittsboro, NC - Due to unexpected weather-related delays from the decal printing company, Chatham County Waste Management Department reports that the distribution of the new waste collection center decals has been delayed until Monday, Feb. 20. “It is important to note that the delay in the decals is not a current problem for residents, because there is a grace period until April 30, said Robert Holden, director of the Waste Management Department.

After April 30, residents must display the decal on their vehicles to use the 12 waste and recycling collection centers. “This means that residents currently using the collection centers without a decal should NOT have any problems with access until May 1,” Holden said.
“All of our collection center guards have been trained on the new decal policy and they have written materials to provide residents, so we hope that center customers will understand that they are not under an immediate deadline to get their decal.”

Holden said, “We apologize for any confusion residents may have experienced due to these unexpected delays. “We are still on schedule for residents to receive decals well in advance of the April 30 deadline. Landlords also should provide the decals to their tenants by that time.”

Holden added that “we understand that the new decal system will be confusing and frustrating to some of our residents, but we are working hard to make this transition as smooth as possible. The decision to use the new decal system at our collection centers was not an easy one and it required many months of study.”

The major factors that finally led the county to implement the decal system were financial considerations, Holden said. “It is costly to allow residents from the eight bordering counties to use the county’s collection centers, both in terms of fuel costs to service the centers and in providing excess disposal capacity.”
