On Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at approximately 3:35 p.m. deputies from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office were called to the Fidelity Bank, 795 Old US 1, Moncure, NC to investigate an attempted armed robbery at that location.

Bank officials reported that two black males were observed in the bank parking lot in a large white vehicle acting suspicious. One of the occupants exited the vehicle and approached the bank with a large knife visible in his hand and some type of mask on his face. The suspect attempted to enter but was unable to. The suspects fled traveling South on Old US 1.

An anonymous eyewitness in the rural community of Moncure observed the incident and followed the suspects to Durham where the witness was able to notify authorities. Durham Police located the suspect vehicle based on the tip and took two suspects into custody. Chatham County Investigators traveled to Durham and met with Durham Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigations Violent Crimes Task Force. As a result of the investigation, evidence was recovered from the suspects and the vehicle linking them to the incident. Both suspects were later charged.

Deandre Levon Leath, age 21, of 1623 Preston Street, Burlington, NC was identified as the driver of the vehicle and charged with 1 count of Attempted Armed Robbery. He is being held in the Chatham County Jail under $7,000 secured bond. Leath has no prior felony charges.

Raymond Lamont Watlington, age 26, of 1704 Glenn Street, Burlington, NC was identified as the suspect that attempted entry into the bank and is also charged with 1 count of Attempted Armed Robbery. He is being held in the Chatham County Jail under $9,500 secured bond. Watlington has several prior felony convictions that include Accessory After the Fact to Armed Robbery and Possession of Cocaine. Warrants were also on file for Watlington’s arrest in Pembroke, NC for Possession of Stolen Goods. Watlington is currently on probation.

Both men are scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court on Feb 4, 2004. Federal charges are pending at this time.
