Chatham County seeks nominations for 2011 Human Relations awards

Pittsboro, NC - The Chatham County Human Relations Commission (CCHRC) announces its third annual awards program to recognize people and organizations for outstanding efforts and accomplishments in human relations.

Esther Coleman, human relations director, said, “The Celebrating Service Awards program honors Margaret B. Pollard, an esteemed leader in Chatham County who died last year.”

“These awards are one of the most important activities conducted by the Human Relations Commission for the express purpose of rewarding those who have given of their time and service to improve the quality of life in their communities,” said Coleman. “The awards program celebrates individuals, persons in business and industry, nonprofits, and religious organizations for their service accomplishments.”

“Award winners will be honored at a ceremony in February, which is Human Relations Month throughout North Carolina,” said Heather Rodin, who chairs the CCHRC. “This year’s nomination deadline is November 5, 2010.”

The categories for 2011 nominations are the same as in previous years:
• Robert A. Siler Lifetime Achievement in Human Relations Award
• Margaret B. Pollard Outstanding Service Award
• Samuel B. Obie Community Service Award
• Margie E. Ellison Community Action Award
• Jerry L. Markatos Diversity in Media Award
• Carl E. Thompson Distinguished Civic Service Award
• Javier Benitez Outstanding Pastoral Service Award

“The awards ceremony is designed to inspire others toward a life of service,” said Coleman. “Previous recipients have represented diverse segments of Chatham County.”

The 2010 honorees included:
• Manuel Colorado;
• Amy Powell, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity;
• Mona Hanner;
• Chatham Habitat for Humanity;
• The Friends of the Library;
• ChathamArts; and
• Various community leaders.
