Chatham issues resolution for state funding to widen Northwood High School Road

Pittsboro, NC - Resolution in Support of The Chatham County Board of Education’s Request For State Funding to Widen Northwood High School Road.

WHEREAS, in November 2006, a traffic study conducted on behalf of the North Carolina Department of Transportation found that traffic counts at Northwood High School are higher than at similar schools in the state; and

WHERAS, said study also found a high number of vehicle delays resulting from school-related vehicles entering the campus and backing up traffic on Northwood High School Road and US 15-501; and

WHEREAS, the study recommended that a 100-foot drive be constructed from Northwood High School Road to the student parking lot to allow for separation of vehicles; and

WHEREAS, the study also recommended that the eastbound right turning lane of Northwood High School Road onto US 15-501 be extended to allow for more efficient operations and prevent traffic backups on Northwood High School Road; and

WHEREAS, finally, the study recommended that a 250-foot left turning lane for the northbound student traffic on Northwood High School Road be constructed to allow for a more efficient loading process and prevent additional delays on Northwood High School Road and US 51-501; and

WHEREAS, the Chatham County Sheriff believes these improvements will enhance vehicle safety and reduce traffic congestion.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Chatham County Board of Commissioners hereby requests that Speaker Joe Hackney include funding for the Chatham County Board of Education’s request in the amount of $312,873 for improvements to Northwood High School Road.
