Pittsboro, NC - After nearly six years of work involving elected officials and staff from Chatham County and the Town of Cary, a proposed Joint Land Use Plan covering a section of eastern Chatham County is ready for a public hearing on January 17, 2012.

The hearing will be part of the regular meeting of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners at 6 pm in Pittsboro in the Agriculture Building Auditorium. If needed, the hearing will be continued on the evening of January 18.

The proposed plan covers approximately 18,000 acres in Chatham County bounded by Jordan Lake on the west, White Oak Creek on the south, Wake County on the east and Durham County on the north.

As part of the plan’s development, a Joint Issues Committee comprised of members of the Board of Commissioners and the Town Council was formed two years ago and has worked with staff to develop a joint land use plan and related map.

Several related public input sessions in Chatham County have been held during over the past few years.

Benjamin Howell, county planner, outlined the general process that will be followed for the adoption of the joint plan by Chatham County and the Town of Cary. Following public hearings by the Board of Commissioners and Town Council in January, the Cary Planning & Zoning Board will hold a public hearing and make a recommendation on the plan while the county Planning Board also will review and make recommendations on the plan.

The Joint Issues Committee will then meet to review the two planning boards’ recommendations and make a final joint recommendation to the Board of Commissioners and Town Council.
