Chatham County, NC - Chatham County taxpayers should receive their 2008 county tax listing forms in a few days.

The General Assembly has increased the household income limit to $25,000 for homeowners 65 or older or who are permanently, totally disabled to qualify for a property tax exemption for their permanent residence. Applications must be made by June 1.

Homeowners who qualify can exclude either $25,000 or half of the permanent residence's assessed value, whichever is greater.

Those who received the exemption last year and still meet the requirements do not have to reapply.

Property owners who no longer qualify or those listing the property of someone who qualified last year but has since died must notify the Tax Office by June 1.

The county plans four education sessions on the exemptions:

* 10:30 a.m. Jan. 8, Council on Aging Senior Center, Pittsboro.

* Noon Jan. 9, First United Methodist Church, Siler City.

* 10:30 a.m. Jan. 14, Western Senior Center, Siler City.

* 10:30 a.m. Jan. 24, Council on Aging Senior Center, Pittsboro.
