Chatham County tax office will start collecting water bills

Pittsboro, NC - Starting August 1, Chatham County’s water customers can pay their monthly water bills at the County Tax Collections Office or use the Tax Office’s outside drop box, instead of paying in person at the Water Department.

“This change only affects customers paying monthly bills in person, not those paying by mail. The mailing address for bill payments remains the same,” said Roy Lowder, director of the Water Department.

The Tax Office is located on the ground floor of the County Courthouse Annex Building at 12 East Street in Pittsboro. This building is on the south side of the downtown traffic circle, facing the historic County Courthouse (in the middle of the circle). The Tax Administration drop box, a white box with multi-colored stripes, is located on the curb behind the Annex Building in the parking lot so that customers can easily drive up and deposit payments.

“The main reason for this change is to make it easier for our customers,” said Roy Lowder, director of the Water Department. “First, customers can come to one location for both water and tax bills. Second, more collection clerks are available in the Tax Office than we are able to provide in our office. Third, it is easy to drive up to the drop box in the parking area. The goal is to get folks in and out faster because we know that they are busy.”

Other types of water system fees or deposits, such as new customer deposits and any type of connection or tap fee, would still be paid by mail or at the Water Department office, located at 70 South Street behind the County Courthouse Annex Building. “This means that those moving into facilities or homes already served by county water or those wanting to hook up for the first time to county water would still come to our office for on-site payment,” Lowder said.

Customers with questions about their county water bill charges or monthly usage should still contact the Water Department at 919-542-8270
