Pittsboro, NC - The Chatham County Tax Office cautions residents that a new state law increases the fee that taxpayers owe if their property taxes are past due and must be collected through actions such as garnishing their wages or attaching their bank accounts or rental income.

“This means that effective August 1, 2011, the taxpayers’ fee increases from $15 to $30 when these actions are taken to collect past due property taxes,” said Tax Collector Frances Wilson. “I hope this means that taxpayers will take additional measures to ensure that taxes are paid on time so that they do not have to pay these extra fees.”
