Commissioners approve school funding in Chatham County's adopted 2009-10 budget[Jun. 16, 2009] The Chatham County Board of Commissioners approved a budget that increases total funding for schools. Funding for K-12 education will be 39% of the county's general fund budget, up from 36.5% in 2008-09. The county's funding per student for 2010 will be $4,010, up $103 per pupil. Chatham County ranked sixth in the state in funding per pupil in 2009-10.
Despite property tax rate decrease some Chatham property owners to pay more in taxes[Jun. 16, 2009] At its meeting on June 15, the Chatham County Board of Commissioners adopted a 2009-10 general fund budget of $80.5 million, a 3% overall reduction from the current budget, and lowered the tax rate from 65.3 cents to 60.22 cents per $100 valuation. If debt payments are excluded, the general fund budget is actually down 7%.
Chatham County confirms four more cases of swine flu[Jun. 15, 2009] Four new cases of H1N1 (also known as swine flu) have been confirmed in Chatham County, bringing the total number of cases in the county to seven. Of the four new cases, two are students at Horton Middle School and one adult has ties to the school.
Chatham County extends period to pay late 2008 taxes until April 30[Apr. 13, 2009] Due to the economic downturn, the Chatham County Board of Commissioners took action in February to extend the period for property owners to pay their 2008 property taxes and late penalties before the Tax Office advertises unpaid property tax liens. However, the extended payment period ends on April 30, 2009.
Homeowner well workshop will be held on March 17[Mar. 13, 2009] Most home buyers would never consider purchasing a home without a thorough inspection of the structure and its operating systems. The same care must be taken to inspect the property’s well system and the quality of its drinking water.

More signups needed for Southwest Chatham Water District[Mar. 13, 2009] While new applications for water service in Chatham County’s Southwest Water have been received, “we are still short of the number we need to proceed with construction,” said Roy Lowder, director of the Utilities Department.
Chatham expands mixed plastic bottle recycling to all collection centers[Mar. 5, 2009] The Chatham County Waste Management Department has announced that recycling of mixed plastic rigid bottles will be expanded to each of its 12 collection centers in the county, effective March 2, 2009. This ensures that the county complies with a state ban on #1 to #7 rigid plastic bottles in landfills.
