[Aug. 10, 2005] The Chatham County Planning Board met in regular session on July 12, 2005 in the auditorium of the Cooperative Extension Building in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Here are the minutes from that meeting.

[Aug. 9, 2005] The Chatham County Health Department has been made aware that property located at 17570 NC HWY 902, Bear Creek is under investigation by the NC Division of Waste Management for the potential illegal discharge of hazardous materials. A Notification of Inactive Hazardous Substance or Waste Disposal Site for the facility dated January 20, 2004 was filed for the site with the Division of Waste Management by Ed Aguirre Earth Science, LLC. The site was added to the state’s Inactive Hazardous Site Inventory database on May 28, 2004.
 
Chatham County mailing tax billsChatham County mailing tax bills
[Aug. 5, 2005] Chatham County residents can expect to receive their 2005 county tax bills as early as next week, according to Tax Administrator Kim Horton. The earlier mailing date should give taxpayers more time to prepare and budget for payment by the due date, January 5, 2006. The tax rate is 59.7 cents per $100 valuation.

[Jul. 29, 2005] Students attending the Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQC) here will conduct a two-week training exercise across a 15-county area in central North Carolina beginning July 29, officials at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School (SWCS) announced July 26. The exercise, called “Robin Sage,” will include Chatham County.
 
Mayors & town commissioners up for electionMayors & town commissioners up for election
[Jul. 19, 2005] In Chatham County, voters in Pittsboro, Siler City and Goldston will go to the polls this fall in municipal races. Mayors and commissioners will be up for election in three municipalities. The filing period for the November 8th municipal elections opened at noon on Friday, July 1.

Chatham seeks volunteers for the Animal Services Advisory CommitteeChatham seeks volunteers for the Animal Services Advisory Committee
[Jul. 15, 2005] The Chatham County Board of Health is creating an Animal Services Advisory Committee to advise the Board of Health regarding animal control, welfare, sheltering, fostering and adoption issues. This committee is to be composed of nine members, who will fill seats designated by occupation, area of representation and avocation and staffed by the health department’s animal control manager, John Sauls.

[Jul. 13, 2005] The Waste Management Division manages approximately 1/3 of the solid waste generated in Chatham County. The remaining 2/3 is handled under contract by the towns of Pittsboro, Goldston and Siler City and by private haulers who offer commercial and residential services. Chatham County has not operated a Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfill since October 1993. All solid waste that is not recycled is hauled to a privately owned transfer station located behind Wal Mart in Siler City. From there it is currently hauled to a private landfill in Sampson County.

Chatham to increase tax rate 4 centsChatham to increase tax rate 4 cents
[Jun. 22, 2005] The Chatham County commissioners voted 4-1 Monday to increase the tax rate 4 cents to 59.7 cents per $100 of property valuation. That's a 7.2 percent increase in revenue after adjusting for this year's property re-evaluation. Chatham county is set to spend $62.5 million during the 2005-06 fiscal year -- a 10.5 percent increase, $5.9 million more than in the 2004-2005 budget.

[Jun. 15, 2005] The Chatham Transit Network, or CTN, provides Chatham county residents with daily subscription route non-emergency medical transportation to Chatham county human service agencies. Medical transportation can also be provided to cities such as Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Winston-Salem and Greenville.
 
Chatham going with a 4-cent tax increaseChatham going with a 4-cent tax increase
[Jun. 8, 2005] The Chatham County Commissioners are moving toward a 4-cent property-tax rate increase per $100 valuation -- 2 cents less than the county manager's proposed spending plan. The commissioners are expected to vote on the budget ordinance at their June 20 meeting.
