As part of its regularly scheduled meeting at 6 p.m. Feb. 21, the Chatham County Board of Commissioners will hold an Environmental Scoping Meeting in regard to the Southeast Chatham and Southwest Chatham water districts. This is part of the process of preparing an environmental asessment for each of the projects.

Preliminary engineering reports have been submitted to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service, which determines which projects it will fund. An environment assessment also must be submitted and considered before the USDA will fund a project.

Comments made during the Environmental Scoping Meeting will be limited to three minutes per person and will become a matter of public record. Those who have environmental concern comments but cannot attend the meeting can send them in writing to the office of the Chatham County Manager, P.O. Box 87, Pittsboro, N.C. 27312, by Feb. 17.

The Southeast Chatham project is proposed to consist of about 24 miles of water main with the capability of serving 350 customers.

The Southwest Chatham project is proposed to consist of about 48 miles of water main with the capability of serving 450 customers.

People can sign up by visiting the county's public works department or call to have a signup form mailed. There is no cost to sign up, but there will be a $500 charge once it is determined that there are enough signups on a particular road to have a water line.
