Pittsboro, NC - The deadline for paying Chatham County property taxes without interest is Jan. 5, 2005; however, to deduct property taxes from income taxes, they must be paid by Dec. 31, county officials said.

Taxpayers should note that the county will observe the New Year's holiday on Dec. 31, and all offices, including the tax office, will be closed that day.

Tax payments may also be dropped in the tax administration drop box located in the parking lot of the Courthouse Annex, Pittsboro, or sent by mail. Officials note a word of caution for those mailing their tax payments: The postmark affixed by the U.S. Post Office will determine the payment date. Interest will be charged if the payment is received after Jan. 5, 2005.

County officials said the tax collector can enforce collection procedures on delinquent tax bills. Collection procedures include advertisement of unpaid real property taxes at an additional cost to the taxpayer, garnishment of wages, attachment of funds, foreclosure, and attachment of state income tax refunds due to taxpayers.

Officials said those unable to make payment in full by the Jan. 5, 2005 deadline, can call the tax collector at 542-8260 to make arrangements to have taxes paid in full by June 30, 2005. However, penalties and interest will still apply.
