Pittsboro, NC - The Chatham County Board of Commissioners seeks 12 new members for its Human Relations advisory committee, which is undergoing a transition from a commission to an advisory committee. The deadline for applications is Sept. 9, 2011.

"We have a new general advisory committee policy adopted in June that covers this committee as well as several others," said Commissioner Brian Bock. "One of the first assignments for new members will be to develop recommendations for the transition, including taking a look at the committee's mission and major goals."

The Human Relations Advisory Committee generally will focus on promoting positive relationships between various groups in the county by advising the Board of Commissioners on human relations issues and concerns. The committee may also recommend county-sponsored programs or activities, such as awards programs and exhibits.

"We want to hear from the members what direction they want the advisory committee to take and we will then provide feedback," Bock said. "We also want them to keep the commissioners updated on any reported incidents of concern in the county, such as reports of racial conflict or overt discrimination so that we can help address confirmed problems."

The 12 open seats include two seats nominated by each of the five county commissioners and two at-large appointments. The terms for all seats will eventually be three years, but this initial round of appointments will stagger the terms by assigning one, two and three-year terms to open seats.

To apply for the Human Relations Committee, complete a volunteer committee application and submit it by Sept. 9, 2011. The application can be found at www.chathamnc.org/Index.aspx?page=49 or call 919-542-8200 for a printed or emailed copy.

For more information on the committee, call County Manager Charlie Horne at 919-542-8200. To get a copy of the adopted advisory committee policy, visit www.chathamnc.org/Index.aspx?page=41 or contact Debra Henzey at 919-548-4662.

The new committee will select its own chair and vice chair at its first meeting, which likely will be in late October.
