Pittsboro, NC - Chatham County offices will be closed on Dec. 31, 2010 as a state and county holiday. This means that residents who still have not paid their 2010 Chatham County property taxes can pay by 5:00 p.m. on Jan. 3, 2011 and their payment will be dated Dec. 31, 2010.

Property taxes can be paid by mail, online, or in person at the Tax Office in the Courthouse Annex building in Pittsboro (located on the south side of the traffic circle). The Tax Office offers a drop box for payments located in the parking area directly behind the Courthouse Annex. A transaction fee is charged for online payments using a credit card or debit card. For more information on how to pay online, visit the following webpage:

If property taxes are not paid by Jan. 5, 2011, the unpaid taxes will begin to accrue interest. At this point, the Tax Office can begin collection procedures for late tax bills, including advertising unpaid real estate property taxes at an additional cost to the taxpayer. Unpaid real property taxes for 2010 will be advertised in the newspaper in the current owners’ names.

Other collection procedures include garnishing wages (removing taxes from paychecks), attaching funds from banking accounts and rental proceeds, sale of personal property, and foreclosing on property. Attaching means that delinquent taxpayers may have the late property taxes taken out of any refunds that might get for state income taxes.

Contact Chatham County Tax collections at 919-542-8260 if you have questions regarding the payment of your 2010 taxes.
