Pittsboro, NC - Chatham County’s deadline for paying 2006 property taxes without interest is Jan. 5, 2007. The county will observe the New Year’s holiday on Jan. 1, 2007, so if you plan to pay your taxes by the end of the calendar year, you may either mail in your tax payment or pay in person by Dec. 29, 2006.

If you come to the tax office in Pittsboro, you may either use the Tax Administration’s white drop box, located in the parking lot directly behind the Courthouse Annex or you can pay in person in the Tax Administration Office, located on the first floor of the Courthouse Annex.

“A word of caution for those mailing their tax payments,” said Frances Wilson, tax collector. “The postmark affixed by the postal service will determine the payment date. Interest will be charged if the payment envelope either has no postmark but is received after Jan. 5, 2007, or it has a metered or postal service postmark dated later than Jan. 5, 2007.

The county’s property listing deadline is also approaching soon. Those who own property in the county must return their property listing form by Jan. 31, 2007. The form must either be received by that date or it must be postmarked by that date. Property owners who fail to meet the listing date will be assessed a 10% penalty.

Contact the Tax Assessor’s office at 919-542-8250 if you own property in the county but do not receive a listing form in early January. You can also call if you need help completing your listing form.

Those at least 65 years old or permanently disabled may qualify for a property tax exemption. To qualify for the exemption, applicants must live on the property and have a household income of no more than $20,500. Contact the Tax Assessor’s Office at 919-542-8250 if you think you may qualify for the exemption and want to request an application form. The exemption application form must be returned to the Tax Assessor’s Office no later than June 1, 2007.

During the week of Dec. 18, 2006, the county’s Waste Management office will begin mailing two 2007 decals to each qualified household that has paid its 2006 county tax bills. The decals are only mailed to county households outside incorporated town limits because these residents have been assessed a solid waste fee as part of their property taxes. The decals give residents admission to the county’s waste disposal and recycling centers, which are supported by the waste fee.

Town residents wishing to use the county’s waste centers may purchase decals from the Waste Management office. If you have questions regarding the decal program, call 919-542-5516 or visit the website.
