Pittsboro, NC - Chatham County Fire Marshal Thomas Bender urges residents whose fire insurance ratings have changed in the past few months to read a Feb. 29, 2012 news statement from the N.C. Department of Insurance (DOI) clarifying the reasons for the changes.

“As noted by DOI, some homeowners saw changes in their fire insurance ratings due to corrections made by insurance companies, based on new technology that allows them to pinpoint an insured property’s exact distance from the nearest fire department,” Bender said. “They are not due to changes in DOI’s policies or its maps, nor any changes made by our Fire Marshal’s Office.”

The statement from DOI said, “Recently, insurance companies have begun using GPS technology, or computer software based on GPS technology, to accurately determine if an insured property is within a fire department’s rated district, its rural district or outside its district. As a result of this new technology, some policies that insurance companies once wrote as being in the rated area are now being written as outside a rated district.” As a result, some homeowners have experienced increases in their fire insurance premiums.

Bender said that the Chatham County Fire Marshal’s Office will continue to provide information to homeowners concerning fire insurance ratings at their address. “However, homeowners must request this information in writing and we will provide responses in writing.”

Residents can send requests to the Chatham County Fire Marshal by email (thomas.bender@chathamnc.org), fax (919-542-0527), or mail to P. O. Box 548, Pittsboro, NC 27312.
