Pittsboro, NC - Chatham Commissioners passed a resolution at their meeting on March 19 proclaiming April 2012 as Earth Month in Chatham County in support of county agencies and community groups hosting events related to Earth Day throughout the month. The full proclamation is available at the county’s website at www.chathamnc.org/EarthMonth.

The Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling Division will host an Earth Day event at its main facility at 720 County Landfill Road on Saturday, April 21. Highlights include a free paper document shredding service from 9 am to 1 pm. Chatham residents can bring up to three boxes or bags of paper per vehicle. To both recycle and prevent identity theft, the service provides a post-tax season opportunity for residents to safely destroy and recycle old tax records, credit card statements, and other personal documents.

During this same time, from 9 am to 1 pm, Earth Machine backyard compost bins are on sale while supplies last for $45 along with a companion kitchen collector for $5. Cash, checks, and Visa or MasterCard are accepted.

Since April 21 falls on the third Saturday of the month, the county’s Household Hazardous Waste facility will be open as scheduled from 9 am to 3 pm to accept items like cleaners and solvents, paint, and electronics of any size.

Chatham County’s Saturday Mulch sale also is underway from 7:30 am to noon for $5 per scoop, which is approximately one cubic yard. County staff will load the mulch and ask that customers bring a tarp to secure their loads. Cash or checks will be accepted.

During the event, county staff will hand out Earth Day giveaways and will be available to answer questions and provide information about recycling programs.

In addition, the Solid Waste & Recycling Division is organizing a month-long promotion offering all Chatham residents a chance to win a great recycling prize pack filled with four stackable mini recycling bins, a Klean Kanteen stainless steel reusable water bottle, and a Chico “Original Earth” Reusable Bag. To be eligible for the prize, participants should obtain an Earth Month Activity Card between April 1 and April 30 from any Collection Center (decal required) or from the division’s main office at 720 County Landfill Road, open Monday through Friday from 7 am to 4 pm.

Residents must complete at least three activities on the card and return the cards by April 30 to be eligible for the prize drawing. Activities involve simple actions such as ‘following’ or ‘liking’ Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling on Twitter or Facebook, attending the division’s Earth Day event on April 21, or correctly answering a few questions about recycling. Ten drawings will be held within the first two weeks of May 2012.

The commissioners also encourage participation in the other events related to Earth Day hosted by community groups and organizations to educate county residents throughout the month of April. For more information or to learn about all events taking place, please contact the Solid Waste & Recycling Division at (919) 542-5516 or visit www.chathamnc.org/EarthMonth.
