Pittsboro, NC - On March 16, 2015, the Chatham County Board of Commissioners approved the creation of a Board of Adjustment that will assume the role of hearing and deciding upon appeals and variances of county land use and development regulations.
In the past, the Board of Commissioners had filled the role of Board of Adjustment, but over the past year had been considering the creation of a separate board to handle these duties. The Board of Adjustment only meets as needed, usually not more than a couple of times a year.
The Board of Commissioners seeks county resident applicants for a total of seven seats on the Board of Adjustment, which include one seat representing each of the five county commissioner districts. Two additional seats are at-large appointees that will serve as alternates. The alternates will be available when a voting member is absent or must abstain from voting due to a conflict of interest.
The appointed members should live outside of incorporated town limits, but may reside in the towns’ extraterritorial jurisdictions (called ETJs).
To determine what commissioner district you reside in and to apply for the Board of Adjustment, visit www.chathamnc.org and use the Quick Links box at the top of the page to find Board & Committee Application option. You also may call the Board of Elections at 919-545-8500 to verify the commissioner district of your residence.
The deadline to apply for the Board of Adjustment is Thursday, April 2, at 5 pm. The Planning Board will review applicants and forward recommendations to the Board of Commissioners for consideration at its meeting on April 20, 2015.
