Pittsboro, NC - Chatham County property owners can expect to see county appraisers visiting their properties over the next six months, starting in the western part of the county in late January, said Tax Administrator Tina Stone.

“This is part of the property revaluation process, which will take effect a year from now, but we wanted people to know that appraisers are out in the field to review properties so that they are not surprised,” Stone said. The role of the appraiser is to review properties to assist in determining their fair market value.

Appraisal visits will begin in the western part of the county by early February. “We expect the work in the western communities to continue for three to four months before appraisers start to visit the eastern properties,” Stone said. The review process is expected to continue for approximately nine months.

“Most are county employees, but some are contract workers. However, all appraisers will wear county identification badges, even if they do not drive a county vehicle,” Stone said. Some of the appraisal site visits will be on weekends, not just weekdays.

If residents are unsure that a person visiting their community is a county appraiser, they can verify the appraiser’s identity by calling either the Tax Appraisal office at 919-542-8211 or the Emergency Communications Office at 919-542-2911.

Chatham County revaluates property every four years and the next revaluation process is underway, Stone said. The new property revaluations will not take effect until Jan. 1, 2009.

For more information on the revaluation process, visit the county website at: www.chathamnc.org/Index.aspx?page=516 or call 919-542-8211.
