Pittsboro, NC – The Woods Charter School Foundation is sponsoring the WoodsRock Musical Festival on August 29, from 11 am to 8 pm at Shakori Hills, 1439 Henderson Tanyard Road, Pittsboro. Local bands include: A Rooster for the Masses and Ideoteque. Tickets: $25/Family, $10/Individual, $7/Student.

An all day concert event will be held on Saturday, August 29 to raise money for the Woods Charter School bus transportation program. According to North Carolina state law, public charter schools do not have to provide bus transportation unless it poses a barrier to children attending the school. Woods Charter School instituted a bus transportation program to better serve the needs of the community but the expense of purchasing and maintaining a school bus is staggering. As a public charter school, Woods receives federal, state, and county funds on a per-pupil basis; however, in exchange for certain freedoms, charter schools receive less of the pie.

Last year Woods Charter School spent $60,000 on bus transportation, and as student transportation needs continues to grow the need for more buses will arise. Charter schools do not receive the same bus transportation funding as do traditional public schools. Woods has no garage to house buses or access to discounted service agreements with mechanics. Every expense surrounding bus transportation must be carefully budgeted and negotiated by Woods. This money could instead expand academic programs, enrich arts programs, or strengthen the physical education department. The Woods Charter School Foundation, a separate nonprofit corporation dedicated to supporting the school, is sponsoring WoodsRock Music Festival with the proceeds going towards purchasing and maintaining a bus for the upcoming school year.

Woods Charter School is a college preparatory school using Core Knowledge Curriculum through eighth grade and the College Board Advanced Placement Program in High School. An impressive 92% of the 2008 graduating class went on to higher education. The average SAT score in North Carolina was 1004 in 2007; Woods students averaged 1099, placing the school sixth in the state. The Woods Charter School community is also a musically inclined group, and many of the band members performing at WoodsRock are graduates of Woods, parents of students, or the school’s faculty and staff. The up and coming band, Ideoteque, is led by Matt Phillips, a current student at Woods and member of the WoodsRock event planning committee. Woods Charter School is well on its way to becoming a stellar educational establishment and point of pride for Chatham County.

Celebrate a day of music and food provided by Kerala Curry Indian, West Family Concessions, and Masterpiece Ice Cream. Gates open at 10:30 am and all bags and coolers will be inspected at the gate as WoodsRock is an alcohol free event. Parking is $2 and directions are available at: .
