Siler City, NC - With the majority of campus preparation completed, furniture and other equipment has begun being moved into Virginia Cross Elementary School. Barring any unforeseen complications, the school system hopes to have its first day in the new school with students on Monday, October 22.
“Everyone is thrilled about being a part of a new school. The sense of reality is setting in as our teachers and staff are seeing their classrooms. We cannot wait to see the reactions of the students when they first see inside their new school,” commented Dr. Julie Vandiver, Principal.
On Friday, October 12, major work on Pony Farm Road was completed, and the school district received final instructions from inspectors on minor adjustments to the roadway. Those adjustments have been made.
The Maintenance Department of Chatham County Schools has been moving equipment, putting together rolling carts, and installing classroom hardware like pencil sharpeners and projector screens. Furniture contractors are completing their work as well. Movers are helping move boxes of classroom materials into the building. Teachers are being able to move their supplies into classrooms and prepare for the first day in the new school with students. Shelving of books in the media center should be completed by mid-week.
“We are excited the time has arrived to move in. We appreciate the patience and work of staff at Virginia Cross Elementary, Chatham Middle, and Siler City Elementary. We also thank our maintenance and technology staff for their extra hours of work in preparation for the arrival of students,” said Dr. Ann Hart, Superintendent.
The school is still not open to the public. Vandiver hopes to hold an open house a week after the school opens. A dedication ceremony will be held later in the fall, once the students and staff have gotten settled in the school.
