The outcomes of the North Carolina Writing Assessments have been released by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in a Preliminary Report of Student Performance. The tests were piloted in 2003 and are given to students in grades four, seven, and ten. Results of the writing tests are not currently calculated into the state ABCs ratings. The tenth grade writing test results, however, count for a portion of the high school Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standings under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) model. Students statewide took the writing test on March 1.

Students are given specific writing prompts and a designated amount of time to write their essays. Essays are read and scored by two independent readers at the state level. Each grade level focuses on a different type of writing. They are:
Grade 4: Extended narrative response (personal or imaginative)
Grade 7: Extended argumentative response (problem/solution or evaluative)
Grade 10: Extended informational response (definition, cause/effect or problem/solution)
