Pittsboro, NC - The strategic planning committee held its monthly meeting on Thursday, March 23, at Horton Middle School.

Gene Huddle, during the introductory segment of the meeting, talked with the group about the need to address different expectations; new norms for performance; the culture of the central office and schools; and school district operation during the process of strategic planning. Huddle, of Performance Solutions, Inc., serves as facilitator for the process. He divides the strategic planning process into three phases: design, development, and implementation.

As a continuation of small group discussions at the February 23rd meeting, participants again worked in groups to confer about strategic priorities. These strategic priorities were:

Strategic Priority: Quality Teachers, Administrators, and Staff Goals

* Recruit, retain, and compensate a diverse corps of quality teachers, administrators, and staff
* Continuous learning and professional development to support high performance of all employees, preschool-twelfth grade
* High ethical and professional standards for all employees

Strategic Priority: Strong Family, Community, and Business Support Goals

* District education priorities responsive to the needs of all children, family, community, and business customers
* Build the capacity of the district to create, respond to and sustain meaningful partnerships and interagency collaborations

Strategic Priority: Effective and Efficient Operations

* Decision making at the most appropriate level to those impacted
* Information and accountability systems that report strategic and operational results
* Align financial and personnel resources to support high student performance
* Cohesive visionary planning communicated to public

“We are beginning to complete the design phase of the strategic planning process and moving into position to be able to actually develop the strategic initiatives that are intended to implement the design. The design is essentially, one, what we want students to know and be able to do; and, two, what we need to do as a school system to make those expectations real,” said Huddle.

The February discussions had centered on two other strategic priorities: high student performance goals and goals for healthy students in safe, orderly, and caring schools.

The focus of the April 27th meeting will be to develop an implementation plan and to
formulate town hall meetings. Finalizing the strategic plan will be the concentration of the last committee meeting on May 25. All meetings are held in the Horton Middle School multipurpose room in Pittsboro. Refreshments are served at 6:30 p.m. The meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. Childcare and Spanish translation are provided.

The committee, comprised of school, family, business, and community representatives, has been meeting monthly since September to develop a long-range strategic plan for Chatham County Schools to present to the Chatham County Board of Education.
