Pittsboro, NC - The Chatham County Board of Education voted in February to increase school meal prices. The increases will take effect at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year. It has been several years since prices have increased, and child nutrition programs across the state are facing challenges in maintaining financial stability.

The price of breakfast for all grade levels in the district will be $1.00. The price of lunch for all grade levels in the district will be $2.00. It should be noted that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) only allows slight decreases in portion sizes for students in kindergarten through third grade.

For those who qualify through federal guidelines, the reduced prices for breakfast and lunch will not change. The prices are .30 for breakfast and .40 for lunch.

As of May 30, 2008, 44.69% of students in Chatham County Schools qualified for free or reduced meal prices through federal guidelines.
