Chatham County Schools proceed with renovation and construction projects

Chatham County, NC - Chatham County Schools has multiple facility improvement projects currently in progress and scheduled for the next two school years. In an effort to keep families, employees, and the community informed, the district will have an ongoing series of renovation and construction updates. This feature is part 1 of that series of periodic updates.

During the summer of 2008, improvements will be made at each of the district’s sixteen schools. These include:

Bennett – a new storage building and a new gym floor and playground drainage work

Bonlee – school being repainted and new gym dressing rooms. (Note: The dressing room project will not be completed by the time school opens.)

Chatham Central – lockers in main building and dressing rooms repaired and repainted, new equipment and new flooring for the weight room, floor tile replacement, and repairs of auditorium seats

Chatham Middle – carpet/tile floor replacement, gym floor sanded, re-striped and refinished

Horton – school being repainted

J. S. Waters – baseball bleachers and lockers in dressing rooms repaired and repainted

Jordan-Matthews - carpet/tile floor replacement including new media center and auditorium carpet, new auditorium stage floor, repairs of auditorium seats, and new sidewalks on the home side of the football stadium

Moncure – cabinet installation and new fire alarm system

North Chatham – receive a restroom mobile unit, receive additional lockers, and gym floor sanded, re-striped and refinished

Northwood – renovation project began in June (includes cafeteria, main lobby, and gym/arts areas), computer lab renovation, football bleacher project, carpet/tile floor replacement including new media center carpet, conversion of a classroom to a science lab, gym floor sanded, re-striped and refinished, grading and new seating at the baseball field, and new traffic pattern/road project that includes an additional road to the student parking lot) (Note: The road project will not be completed by the time school opens.)

Perry Harrison – new storage building

Pittsboro Elementary – window replacement project and carpet/tile floor replacement

SAGE Academy – sidewalk replacement and new ceiling tile

Siler City Elementary – new flooring in multipurpose room

Silk Hope – equipment storage building renovation, new storage building and school being repainted

Virginia Cross Elementary – new storage building and South Second Avenue/Alston Bridge roadway work

Over the next three years, the district will be putting IP-based (digital) camera systems in every school. The system at Virginia Cross Elementary School is already up and running. Systems at Bennett, Bonlee, Chatham Middle, Jordan-Matthews, Moncure, Northwood and SAGE are in the process of being installed.

A new middle school in the Briar Chapel development is slated to open in the fall of 2010.

A new high school on Jack Bennett Road is slated to open in the fall of 2011.

The redistricting process will begin closer to the time of the opening of the new schools.

In an effort to handle overcrowding until the new schools open, the district has added additional mobile units at North Chatham School and Perry Harrison School. Construction on a new classroom wing and expansion of the gym and cafeteria areas at Northwood High School began in June of 2008. That expansion will take approximately one year.
