Pittsboro, NC - Here is a summary of the Chatham County Board of Education meeting held on Monday, June 20, at the central office in Pittsboro.

The Board approved the consent agenda.

The following new business items were addressed:

A. 2010-2011 budget amendments – approved

B. 2011-2012 budget resolutions – approved

C. Board Policy 6125 (Administering Medicines to Students) – approved on first reading

D. Contract award (Chatham Central & Jordan-Matthews auditorium renovations, Chatham Central & Moncure restrooms) - approved

E. NC School Boards Association board survey – The Board completed this survey during the meeting.

F. Extension of school day for Jordan-Matthews – approved

G. 2011-2012 school calendar option – presented as informational (This item is related to recent state legislation requiring 185 instructional days and 1,025 instructional hours for students in the 2011-2012 school year. The NC Department of Public Instruction is requesting superintendents select one of three options for language related to a “waiver” to this legislation. Superintendent Logan will select the option that would allow school districts to request a one-time waiver that would allow time for the district to prepare to implement a 185-instructional day calendar the 2012-2013.)

H. Agenda format discussion – The format for the meeting agendas will change in the upcoming school year to include more items on the consent agenda (such as contracts, second readings of policies with no changes at first reading) in order to allow more time for educational presentations during the board meetings.

I. Selection of Board redistricting source – The Board of Education is considering the best options for redistricting its voting districts and will consult with the County Commissioners to consider the potential for drawing similar voting district lines as both boards are in the process of redistricting.

J. County Commissioner land banking – The County Commissioners are discussing the purchase of a 145-acre piece of property off US 1 and Pea Ridge Road (Moncure area) that could house a K-12 school complex and a county park. The Board expressed its support of the exploration of this property purchase and also reiterated the need for land to build an elementary school in the northeast part of the county.

Assistant Superintendent Robin McCoy shared 2010-2011 unofficial end-of-grade and end-of-course results with Board members. Official results will be released on August 4th following approval by the State Board of Education.
