Pittsboro, NC - The Reading Rocks fundraiser at Perry Harrison School has inspired increased student reading. It all began on October 29 when the entire school was invited to the Reading Rocks kickoff. The contest guidelines were explained:

Students could participate in Reading Rocks by simply reading or by reading and raising money for the school. For the first week, students would take pledges based on how many minutes they could read in a week’s time. The next week, students would read and read and read! The week after, they would collect money based on their pledges. Prizes were awarded daily to the students who read the most in each grade level. The classes at each grade level that averaged the highest number of reading minutes daily also received the “Golden Book” award.

When all the money collected was counted, the school had made in excess of $8,000. The money kept on coming, even after the collection was over and now the school has made over $9,500. The funds will be used to purchase additional online subscriptions and technology.

Students in grades K-2 who participated in Reading Rocks were rewarded with extra playtime. Reading Rocks participants in grades 3-5 were invited to an end of day dance in the multipurpose room.

The crowning event happened in front of the entire student body. Students who raised the most money in each classroom had the opportunity to throw a pie in the face of a staff member of their choice. The adults chosen to get pies were: Mr. Thomas (fourth grade teacher), Mr. Davis (music teacher), Mr. Wustrow (third grade teacher assistant), Mr. Gilmore (lead custodian), Ms. Holmberg (first grade teacher), Ms. Hamm (1st grade teacher assistant), Ms. Sipe (PE teacher), Ms. Denniston (AIG teacher/Curriculum Coach), Ms. Frazier (principal), and Mr. Barnwell (assistant principal). The top money collector was awarded a $150.00 Wal-Mart Gift Card.

“Reading Rocks was an exciting way to encourage reading and to raise money for additional school resources. Perry Harrison students and staff had a great time, and the initiative was an outstanding success,” commented Frazier
