Pittsboro, NC - Perry Harrison School held a DARE graduation program on Monday, March 12. Deputy Sandra Ross presented certificates to all fifth graders for their participation in the program. Sheriff Richard Webster, Captain Charles Gardner, Sergeant Chris Cooper, Corporal Tom D'Angelo and Deputy Kyle Smith were present to wish the students well.
Webster and Gardner spoke to the students about the dangers of drug and alcohol use and the importance of choosing friends carefully. D'Angelo brought in his dog to demonstrate how the Sheriff's Office uses dogs to sniff out drugs.
Students submitted essays about the use of drugs and alcohol. Three students, one from each class, were selected to read their essays. Molli Eddins, Shelby Kremer, and Leah Perry were the DARE essay winners.
The DARE program teaches students how alcohol and drugs can affect them mentally and physically, thus keeping them from reaching their goals in life.
Students in fifth grade across Chatham County Schools participate in the DARE program each year.
