Pittsboro, NC - Northwood High School will present its annual spring musical March30-April 1. The performances begin at 7 p.m. each evening and will be held in the Benjamin Lee Auditorium on the school campus. Admission is $6 the public. Seniors and children 4 and under, $4.

King Sextimus and Queen Aggravain with cast and crew from Once Upon a Mattress, introduced children to the upcoming performance. In addition to the royal family, ladies-in-waiting, knights, princesses, the court magician, jester, and musicians performed at North Chatham, Perry Harrison, Moncure, and Pittsboro Elementary schools.

Once Upon A Mattress is a zany retelling of the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea. Mary Rodgers (daughter of Richard Rodgers) composed the music. The book was written by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer. The 1959 Broadway production marked the debut of Carol Burnett.

The students heard a brief introduction to the story, based on the classic fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea, and three musical numbers from the show. Afterwards, cast members answered questions from the audience. In addition to wondering where the knights kept their horses and swords, many asked about the time it took to prepare the play and the costumes. An interesting fact is that, though some of the costumes are rented, Hannah Yerby, one of the musicians, made several of the gowns worn for the Queen, Lady Larkin, and Princess Winnifred.

Lori Carlin, director for the musical and chairperson of the Arts Education Department, noted that the school visits provided publicity for the musical and gave the high school students an opportunity to showcase the wide variety of the arts programs at Northwood. This marks Lori Carlin's 9th year at Northwood, with Mattress the 9 th musical production.

The production is a collaborative effort of the entire Northwood Arts Education Department. Amy Loch, choral director, conducts the musical band, Eugene Cottrell, band director, plays trumpet, and Leslie Burwell, visual arts teacher, coordinates scenery that includes a castle that is home to the royal court while they are in residence at Northwood's Benjamin Lee Auditorium. Leah Smith has choreographed the show.

Join the royal court of knights and their ladies faire, a minstrel, a jester, and a magician, along with the royal family to find out if this unlikely princess can pass the test in time!

Once Upon A Mattress runs March 30, 31, and April 1 at 7pm in the evening. General admission is $6. Seniors & Children under 4, $4.
