Pittsboro, NC - The highlight of the marching band season came on a dazzling Saturday afternoon for the Northwood Marching Charger Band at the North Davidson High School Band Festival. The final competition on November 5 marked the culmination of months of rehearsals, preparation, construction, revisions and refinements by the 75 band members, 14-member color guard, band director, assistant instructors, and crew of family and friends.

In an almost unprecedented conclusion, the Marching Chargers pulled off a clean sweep of first place awards in every category of the 3A
Division. First place awards were presented to the Northwood program, Pathways, Highways & Skyways, for Music, Marching, Percussion, General Effect, Color Guard, and Drum Major (Kara Smith, in her first year).

It was an exhilarating finale after finishing in 3rd place the previous week at the Lee Senior High Brick Capital Classic in Sanford, only .4 of a point below the 1st place band.

Fans will have several opportunities to see these excellent musicians in performance before the semester ends. Their Holiday Concert is scheduled for Thursday, December 8 at NHS and they perform in the Annual Pittsboro Christmas Parade on Sunday, December 4.

Efforts now focus on fund-raising in preparation for next year’s program that includes a competition in New York. See band members to purchase tickets for the annual $10,000 raffle, as well as poinsettias and fresh Florida fruit for the holidays. Annual budget for the organization is approximately $30,000. Community support is vital. Please contact Band Director Eugene Cottrell (542-4181,, or Band Booster President Lib Harriss (943-2445, to make a contribution.
