Pittsboro, NC - The Northwood Marching Charger Band traveled to West Alamance High School on Saturday, October 21, for its eighth annual performance in the Central NC Band Festival. Competing with six other bands in their class, they achieved a superior rating of 88.73 and took the AAA second place award.

Kara Smith took the First Place Drum Major Award with a score of 91, the highest drum major score of the day in any class. Smith has scored first place in every competition this season.

Northwood also received second place awards in percussion and colorguard divisions.

“These kids have really outdone themselves this year. This is a strong group with lots of very good leaders. We will graduate twenty-three seniors at the end of this season, some of which I have had in band for seven years including their tenure at Horton. Leadership that strong will not be easy to replace. I do hope that our talented Perry Harrison, North Chatham and Horton eighth graders will consider becoming a part of this top notch band program,” said Eugene Cottrell, band director.

This performance follows the band's recent trip to New York to perform at the Yamaha Cup Competition at Giants Stadium. Northwood earned the second place award out of twenty-eight bands in the small division, with a score only 5/100 point behind first place. They were rated eleventh of the fifty bands in the competition.

On Saturday, October 28, the Marching Chargers will present the 2006 program, Heartbeat!, for the final time at the Brick Capital Classic in Sanford.
