Pittsboro, NC - The Art Department of Northwood High School will host a student art show and an Italian dinner on Thursday, January 11. The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the dinner being held in the school cafeteria from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The art show will be held in the main lobby from 6:00-9:00 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at a cost of $10 from art students or by emailing Leslie Burwell, art teacher, at

The dinner menu is lasagna, a salad, bread, and cheesecake. There will be the choice of three different types of lasagna, meat, vegetable, or cheese. The dinner costs $10 per plate. Takeout plates will be also available.

The student art show will display work from the Drawing and Painting class and two Introduction to Art classes. Participating in art shows is part of art course requirements. The goal in doing so is that all art students understand the value of showing artwork in a public setting.

The Drawing and Painting Class has worked in mediums of charcoal, pastel, sumi brush painting, watercolor and acrylic.

The Introduction to Art classes focused on the elements and principles of design. They applied those basics to a claymation unit. Students worked in teams to create a storyboard, set design and clay puppets. They filmed and edited movie clips using a computer animation program acquired from a grant that Burwell received from the Chatham Education Foundation. Several of the short animation clips will be on display at the winter show.

This spring the visual art and theater students will hold a student film festival with the senior art exhibit.

Calendars and cards will also be on sale at the event. A ten-pack of cards will cost $10.00. Calendars will cost $20.00 each. The cards and calendars display the artwork of art club members and visual art students.

"The quality of the printing is amazing. I am very pleased that my students have the opportunity to raise funds for their New York trip using their art. I am thankful for the community support of this fundraiser," said Leslie Burwell, art teacher.
