Pittsboro, NC - The Arts Education Department at Northwood will present Stephen Sondheim’s "Into The Woods" as its 2009 spring musical. In this cautionary tale about getting your heart’s desire, familiar fairy tale characters such as Cinderella, her Prince, Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel cross paths with unexpected results.

Along with James Lapine, Sondheim uses these characters to contemplate what happens after the happily ever after. The 1986 musical won several Tony awards and is one of the most ambitious works the NHS Arts Education Department has undertaken. In addition to the title song, musical numbers include Children Will Listen, Agony, and Giants in the Sky.

More than a decade long tradition, the spring musical is an extra-curricular activity for both students and teachers, involving hundreds of hours of preparation, rehearsals, set construction and design. Directed by Lori Carlin, the production team also includes music director Marilyn Shugart, Eugene Cottrell preparing the band and playing trumpet, choreographer Leah Smith, and set decorator Leslie Burwell working with her visual arts students to create the enchanted forest.

As is tradition, the cast will tour area schools in an effort to introduce Chatham's elementary and middle school students to arts education programs & opportunities. The "Into The Woods" Tour is scheduled for Friday, March 20.

This year’s production follows sold-out performances of "Grease" in 2008 and Disney’s "Beauty & the Beast" in 2007. Make plans now to attend the March 26–28 performances in Northwood’s Benjamin J. Lee Auditorium. Curtain time is 7 o’clock in the evening. Admission is $8 ($6 for senior citizens and children under 5).
