Northwood High School senior is a Park Scholarship finalist

Pittsboro, NC - Chelsea Gardner, a senior at Northwood High School, is a finalist for the Park Scholarship at North Carolina State University. She is the daughter of Charles and Saundra Gardner. Finalists will participate in an on-campus weekend February 18-20 as a final step to recipients being chosen.

Gardner is the senior class president, a varsity cheerleader, and a member of the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, and the National Art Honor Society. She volunteers with Habitat for Humanity and is a attended the North Carolina Governor's School last summer in the area of English. Gardner plans to major in communications.

The Park Scholarship is a four-year scholarship covering tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and travel and personal expenses. A $2,400 stipend toward a computer is also part of the scholarship. Opportunities for study abroad and grant funding are also part of the program.

The Park Scholarships were established at NC State University in 1996 through a grant from the Park Foundation. The program is named for Roy H. Park, a 1931 NC State alumnus. Since the inaugural class of 25 Park Scholars, the number of scholars on campus has grown to nearly 200. Approximately 50 scholarships are awarded each year to outstanding high school seniors for undergraduate study in any discipline.
