Pittsboro, NC - Five Northwood High School students and their advisor attended the 52nd North Carolina Association of Student Councils (NCASC) Summer Leadership Workshop on the campus of Mars Hill College during the week of July 11-15. Juniors Diane Thompson (Student Body President), Brandon Edwards (Student Body Vice-president), Alishca McCrimmon (Student Body Secretary), senior Blake Scruggs (Student Body Treasurer) and Morgan McDonnell (Junior Class Treasurer) spent the week with other student council leaders from across the state in a series of activities to prepare them for the coming year.

All activities revolved around the theme of the workshop: "Exploring the Nature of Leadership," the NCASC state theme for 2011-2012.

The approximately two hundred twenty five students were divided into groups resembling the student councils at their home schools. They planned activities and completed projects with their new councils in addition to participating in other group teambuilding activities such as the Leadership “Safari,” Boundary Breaking, the Leadership Olympics and the ever popular Folk Dance.

Terri Johnson, a nationally known leadership trainer and former student council advisor from Missouri, served as the consultant for the workshop. She conducted general sessions, led group activities and taught a skill-building class. Other student council advisors also conducted skill-building classes.

The individual councils also elected officers in order to facilitate their work throughout the week. McCrimmon and McDonnell served as secretaries of their prospective groups and Thompson was her council’s treasurer. Foust served on staff as one of the coordinators of the program for the student council advisors that attended the week-long training.

Northwood Student Council members will attend other workshops, conferences and conventions throughout the year to continue getting more leadership training and activity ideas from other schools.
